How pharmacy licensing works in Utah.
Utah licenses pharmacy technicians rather than simply registering them, with a trainee stage and set training hours. Its pharmacists also have defined prescribing authority for several medicines.
NAPLEX plus the Utah MPJE
Utah requires the NAPLEX, the Utah MPJE and at least 1,740 internship hours. Applications go through the Division of Professional Licensing and include fingerprints.
Licensure by endorsement
Pharmacists licensed elsewhere can apply by endorsement, using NABP's license transfer program to verify their history. You must pass the Utah MPJE before applying.
Trainee, then licensed
Trainees complete an accredited training program with at least 180 hours of supervised practical training and pass the required exam within two years. Out-of-state technicians need PTCB or ExCPT certification and recent experience.
Pharmacist prescribing
Utah pharmacists can prescribe hormonal contraceptives, naloxone, tobacco cessation products and HIV PrEP and PEP under Division guidance. In 2026 the legislature added epinephrine and vaccines.
