You’ve done it. All those years of lectures, placements, revision and assessments have led to this exact moment. Your GPhC pin has arrived. You’re officially a pharmacist!

So what happens now?

If you’re feeling unsure, a bit overwhelmed, or like you need to get a job yesterday. Take a breath! You’re not behind. You’re not expected to know exactly what you want straight away. And you definitely don’t need to settle for the first role that comes your way.

Here’s what you should be thinking about now.

Take your time before saying yes

It’s really common for newly qualified pharmacists to panic-apply. One offer lands, and before you know it, you’re saying yes just to feel like you’re moving forward.

But this is your career. That first job sets the tone for your learning, your confidence and how you feel about your profession…

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to work in a busy community pharmacy, a clinical role or something more non-typical?
  • Do I want a supportive team, chances to develop, or the option to try different locations?
  • Does the workplace culture feel right to me?

There’s nothing wrong with taking a bit of time to figure it out properly. You’ve earned that space.

Community Pharmacy isn’t your only option

A lot of pre-regs move straight into a community setting- it's familiar and it's super accessible. Plus, it’s a great way to gain experience.

Now more than ever, Pharmacists are exploring roles outside he conventional pathways. Alongside community and hospital roles, many newly registered pharmacists are branching into:

  • Pharmaceutical and industry
  • Research and clinical trials
  • Finance and data-related roles
  • Tech and digital health platforms
  • Regulatory affairs and policy
  • Medical writing or consultancy

It’s OK to be curious about options that weren’t discussed during your pre-reg year. The profession is changing, and there’s room to find your place.

Know your value as a Pharmacist and Employee

A common mistake we see? Newly qualified pharmacists are undervaluing themselves.

Just because you’re at the beginning doesn’t mean you should accept poor (under standard) pay, limited support or unrealistic expectations. You’ve trained hard, gained hands-on experience, and passed through the UK’s top 10 most difficult courses and exams. That counts for something.

The right employer will look at your enthusiasm, your fresh knowledge, your drive to succeed and most importantly, your potential. Don’t be afraid to ask questions in interviews- we always recommend this. Ask about pay, team structure, and what a typical day really looks like.

You’re ALWAYS allowed to be selective. In fact, you should be.

Don’t try to do it all on your own

This stage of your career will feel overwhelming. Suddenly, you’re not a student. The decisions feel real.

But you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Find people who can support you. That might be a Pharmacist mentor, a trusted family friend from uni, or a recruitment agency like Quad who have the inside scoop  on Pharmacy careers. We take time to listen to what you want, explain the options clearly and hel you choose roles that suit your goals and lifestyle.

No pressure, no drama, just guidance when you really need it.

Don’t panic if you don’t have a plan

Some of your friends might already know where they’re heading for their first role. Others might see that they have it ALL figured out. However, most people are figuring it all out as they go along.

Your first job doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be a good fit for where you are now.

Careers evolve. What matters is finding a role where you’ll be supported, where you’ll learn, and where you love coming into work every day.

Everything else will follow.
