In today’s competitive dental job market, it’s not enough to have the skills—you need to showcase them. A well-crafted dental portfolio can set you apart and help employers visualise the value you bring to their team. Whether you’re applying for associate dentist roles, private practice positions, or even locum work, your portfolio should serve as your professional shop window.

Here’s how to build a portfolio that not only looks the part but feels it too.

1. What to Include in Your Dental Portfolio

Case Studies (Before & After)
These are your strongest visual selling point. Choose 3–5 standout cases where your clinical ability shines—think restorations, whitening, cosmetic work, implants, or orthodontic treatments. Include clear before-and-after photos (with consent!), your treatment plan, the tools/materials used, and the result.

Patient Reviews & Testimonials
Third-party validation is everything. Add screenshots or quotes from Google reviews, NHS Friends & Family responses, or even feedback forms. These build trust and prove patient satisfaction.

Certifications & CPD
Show that you’re committed to growth. Include any postgraduate qualifications, online courses, or CPD you've completed—especially if it's relevant to the role you're applying for.

Treatment Outcomes or Audit Data
If you’ve been part of an audit or have outcome stats (e.g. success rate of fillings, reduced no-show rates), include them. It shows a results-driven mindset.

2. Format: Go Digital, or Go Home

Avoid Word Docs
Word documents look dated and unprofessional. They can also cause formatting issues depending on how they’re opened.

Choose PDF or Interactive Formats

  • PDFs are the gold standard: easy to email, print, and open on any device.
  • Instagram-style Portfolios (carousel images or a private portfolio page) are gaining popularity—especially with younger, tech-savvy employers or cosmetic-focused clinics.
  • Online Portfolio Links (via Notion, Canva, or personal websites) are great for a seamless, scrollable experience.

3. Layout: Keep it Clean & Clickable

A good dental portfolio is:

  • Easy to navigate (use a contents page for longer documents)
  • Visual-first (images > text)
  • Light on jargon (especially if non-clinical staff might view it)
  • Professional but personal (include a short ‘About Me’ with a friendly tone)

Pro Tip:

Use section headers, bullet points, and icons to break up the text and avoid fatigue.

4. Colour Psychology in Your Design

The colours you choose can provoke real emotional responses in the viewer:

  • Blues → Trust, professionalism, calm (great for clinical feel)
  • Greens → Health, balance, growth (ideal for holistic or NHS-based roles)
  • White & Neutrals → Cleanliness, simplicity, clarity (helps images pop)
  • Soft pinks or corals → Warmth, approachability, care (great for cosmetic or paediatric portfolios)

Avoid harsh reds or neons—they can feel aggressive or distracting.

5. Final Touches

  • Add your GDC number, location, and contact details.
  • Keep the file under 10MB for easy emailing.
  • Consider naming it clearly: John-Smith-Dental-Portfolio.pdf

A dental portfolio isn’t just about showing what you can do—it’s about helping the employer feel confident in hiring you. From the colours to the layout, every detail should reinforce your professionalism, care, and attention to detail. Everyone should be able to create a simple yet effective design, if this is out of your ability, there are multiple designers that will create a portfolio for you at a reasonable price.
