Let’s break down what kind of salaries you might expect across various roles, from traditional to more unexpected paths, in your first five years post-qualification.
Community and NHS Hospital Roles
Let’s start with the most common route pharmacists will take.
NHS Band 6 Pharmacist:
- Starts at £35,392 in England and Wales
- Around £37,831 in Scotland
- Increases to around £37,350 to £40,000 after two years
NHS Band 7 (Years 2 to 5):
- Progression moves you into £43,700 to £45,996
- Clinical and patient-facing roles become more accessible

- Medical Science Liaison (MSL) roles: £45,000 to £60,000 starting salary
- Regulatory Affairs Pharmacists: typically start at £40,000 to £50,000
- Clinical Research Associates (CRAs): around £35,000 to £45,000 early on, with progression to £60,000+
- Pharma Sales (e.g. Key Account Manager): £40,000 base with bonuses pushing total packages to £60,000+
