What is an Anabolic Pharmacist?

 Alt Text

An anabolic pharmacist  is a pharmacist who dispenses, prescribes, and advises on anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing drugs to athletes and rehabilitation patients.

Modern athletes use medications for recovery and performance improvement. However some anabolics in pharmacy can provide an unfair advantage to athletes. For the same reason, WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) has banned/restricted many of these drugs.

Your responsibilities in this role are to maintain fairness in sports and protect athletes’ health. This includes informing athletes about safe and legal medication use. Additionally, you will ensure that the advised level of these drugs meets doping laws and monitor their effects on the athlete's body.

How to Become an Anabolic Pharmacist

Step 1

First, you will need a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm.D). With that, you will have extensive knowledge about drug therapy, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and more.

Step 2

With that foundation, you must learn sports medicine and the usage methods of PEDs. There are specialized residency programs and certifications for this. These programs provide hands-on knowledge directly from seasoned professionals in your industry.

Step 3

To start your service as an anabolic pharmacist, you need the necessary licensures. This includes clearing the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination and the relevant state licensure.

Step 4

Stay informed about the latest anti-doping regulations and practice guidelines set by WADA. Keeping up-to-date with research reports ensures efficacy, ethics, and safety in your work.

Step 5

Along with all the theoretical knowledge, gain practical experience through internships in sports pharmacy. This is often the most important part of getting hired.
