How to Become a Pharmacy Technician

Earn A High School Diploma or Equivalent

The minimum requirement to become a pharmacy technician is to receive your diploma or equivalent, like the GED. This is a crucial prerequisite that you need in order to be considered for training programs.

Attend an Accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program

There are many different pharmacy technician programs available, both online and in person. These programs typically take 1-2 years to complete. Pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE)

One way to get certified is to attend an accredited school. Successful completion of this program will prepare you for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) offered through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Once you’ve passed the PTCE, you’ll effectively be deemed qualified and ready to begin working as a pharmacy technician.

Obtain a Pharmacy technician license

Each state has its own requirements for obtaining a pharmacy technician license. Be sure to check with the state board of pharmacy in the state where you want to work for more information. Once you do have your license issued, you’re ready to begin applying for a pharmacy technician job.
